The castle, the spiritual place - Hunedoara County

Sarmizegetusa Regia

(Capital of the Dacian Kingdom)

Corvin Castle (1140-1146: 1458-1480)

A short history

Throughout history, the Hunedoara County has been an important place for the Dacians, Romans, Habsburgs, Hungarians and Romanians. The first King of the Dacians, Burebista (from 82/61 B.C. until 45/44 B.C.), managed to unite the Dacian tribes. His kingdom extended from the Danube to Tisza and Dniester rivers, roughly as modern day Romania. He founded Sarmizegetusa Regia, which was the military, political and religios center of the Kingdom. In the capital's religious life, god Zalmoxis and his chief priest played the most important roles. The capital remained the same until the reign of King Decebal who fought the Romans led by Emperor Trajan in two wars (101-102 A.C. and 105-106 A.C.) when Sarmizegetusa Regia was completely destroyed and the region was conquered. The Hunedoara County was an important gold and silver mining center for the Dacians and for the Romans. The main reason for the Trajan wars against the Dacians were the huge gold deposits. The mining had continued until our days. After the conquest, the Romans moved the capital of the new Roman province of Dacia 40 km away, at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa. The county is also site for an important medieval castle, built in the XIV-th century, the Corvin Castle. This is among the most iconic castles in Romania and Europe, built in gothic style by the Voievod of Transylvania, John Hunyadi (the father of the Great King Matthias Corvinus). The castle has three large areas: the Knights Hall, the Diet Hall and the Circular Stairway. The castle went through several restoration projects, among which some of the most important in the XVII-th and XIX-th centuries. The most important owners have been King Matthias Corvinus and Gabriel Bethlen. Nowadays, the Ministery of Culture.

Another important landmark is the Fortress of Deva, built after 1242 A.C. It is situated in the county's capital with the same name. The first military record of the fortress is 1273, when the Cumans were defeated by the Kingdom of Hungary. The fortress offers a spectacular view of the Deva city, being located on a hill

Hunedoara County nowadays

Sarmizegetusa Regia is a touristic attraction for Romanians and foreigners, being admintrated and organized by the Ministry of Culture. Some people in Romania consider it to be a spiritual place, which emanates energy because of its location and the religious temples that were once there. You can see a lot of people who take off their shooes and walk bare foot on the grounds. Besides the position of the temples, you can also see the remainings of the fortified walls and the Dacian roads.

Corvin Castle is one of the most iconic landmarks in Romania and a touristic attraction. It is open to the public and can be visited. It is currently under restoration (process started 2019 and will end 2021). Being an iconic Gothic style, the castle was set for many films, for different countries (The Nun: Dragon heart 4; Ghost rider 2; some reality shows that feature vampires on Travel Channel and Discovery).

Deva fortress restoration was completed in 2016 and can now be visited. The fortress can be accessed by taking the gondola or by walking some way on a steep gradiant. It offers to its visitors a wonderful birdsight view of the Deva city. In Deva, you can visit the Orthodox Cathedral and the musical fountain.
